Relay For Life is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society held in many communities across the United States. Memorial Scholarship Fund Benefits Bremerton School District

May 2, 2007

BREMERTON, WA – MAY 2, 2007 - The Bremerton School District has become the sole beneficiary of the combined estates of Henry and Elsinor Groth, and Mrs. Groth’s brother, Wayne Elder. Having no descendants, the three bequethed a living legacy to the Bremerton school district in the form of a trust worth an estimated 2 million dollars. The purpose of the trust shall be to fund an ongoing Scholarship program for high school graduates within the Bremerton School district. The Scholarship awards will be based on economic need, merit, and citizenship as determined by a Scholarship Selection Committee. Students can contact the Counselor’s office at Bremerton High School for more information.

Mr. Groth and Mr. Elder were civilian federal workers for most of their working years, employed at the Naval Shipyard and Keyport Undersea Weapons Station respectively. Mrs. Groth was employed for many years with Kitsap Physician’s Service. The Groths lived in the Brownsville area since the 1940’s, and after a lifetime of work became active in local endeavors. One particular area of interest to Mrs. Groth was the local Literacy Council.

“American Marine Bank serves as trustee of the trust, with the school district as the sole beneficiary,” said Cal Springer, American Marine Bank’s Trust Officer in Silverdale. “The compelling feature of this trust is its perpetual nature. In other words, the interest earnings from the investments will continue to grow and allow the trust to last forever. That’s a considerable legacy for students now and in the future.” The first Scholarships awards will begin in May of 2007, totaling more than $60,000. With the investment earnings, it is estimated that the 2008 scholarships will total more than $80,000.
